Tyres are all too often overlooked even though they may be the decisive factor in whether a collision can be avoided or not.
That’s the message from TyreSafe during this year’s Tyre Safety Month.
New figures show there were 491 casualties from collisions related to tyre defects in 2021, including 12 fatalities.
TyreSafe says the figures leave no room for confusion; tyres are vital to road safety.
This year’s Tyre Safety Month, which runs throughout October, asks the question ‘If your tyres don’t stop you, what will?’.
The message aims to remind motorists of the benefits and importance of tyre checks but also carries the literal message that, as the only point of contact between the road and the vehicle, it is tyres which are crucial for safe and effective braking and cornering.
TyreSafe has developed an ‘impactful’ suite of resources, all of which incorporate the powerful acronym ‘ACT – air pressure, condition, tread’. Some of these are available to download via the TyreSafe website.
Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe chair, said: “This year’s Tyre Safety Month campaign leaves no room for confusion or question that tyres are vital to road safety.
“In an emergency, roadworthy tyres could be the difference between driving away and the unthinkable. Ignoring tyre safety and putting others at risk is inexcusable, especially when it only takes a few minutes to check your tyres every month.”
